While Gout appeared to correlate with hip and knee replacement in OA, suggesting hyperuricaemia with crystal deposition and inflammation to be an aggravating or possibly even pathogenic factor in cartilage damage, urate lowering therapy (ULT) did not seem to make any difference.
However, the latter conclusion was based on cumulative ULT prescribed, and did not capture information on actual compliance to medication, or whether serum uric acid levels (SUA) were treated to target. Gout patients are notoriously poorly compliant with medication; and a separate study suggested that the majority on ULT were not dose-escalated to achieve recommended SUA levels.
