A little-known association with NAFLD is Hyperuricaemia and Gout. It is part of the Metabolic Syndrome involving Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Dyslipidaemia and Obesity, so it’s difficult to tease its individual impact on cardiovascular and liver cirrhosis risks apart from the other risk factors.
However, a direct toxic and pro-inflammatory mechanism of uric acid on tissues (eg kidneys, joints, connective tissue) is known, so a causal relationship is plausible, perhaps even being the lynchpin between the Metabolic Syndrome and NAFLD.
We should seriously be treating Hyperuricaemia and Gout to crystal-dissolution target as proposed by the ACR/EULAR, and not just a pain-relief target as myopically suggested by the ACP.
