How does one determine how much Vitamin D is “enough”?
This study looks at Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) level to gauge. PTH is produced in response to the body’s need to maintain blood calcium level at a narrow range for various vital live processes to function optimally. PTH will “melt” bone to release calcium into the bloodstream.
The study found that blood level of at least 36 ng/ml (90 nmol/L) of Vitamin D3 is needed to keep PTH level suppressed. This is higher than the 30 ng/ml level deemed “normal” currently.
To achieve this blood level of D3, daily supplementation of D3 of 4000 iu is required, when current recommendation is 1000-2000 iu daily; already much higher than the 400 iu of ancient times.

Fortunately, such high doses were not associated with hypercalcaemia, kidney stones or cardiovascular events.
